I didn't actually go to school to be a graphic artist. Everything I know I've learned - not necessarily on my own; since my co-workers of course had to help show me how to do some things; but mostly self-taught. I've never been one to just take things for face value, I usually want to know the ins and outs of things, too. Which comes in pretty handy for learning software and hardware!
My first attempt at graphic design was using Word Perfect, designing brochures back in the early nineties. I soon was lucky enough to get a job as a graphic artist at Kwik Kopy, which is where I first learned anything about true graphic design, although it was cutting and pasting, and using a wax machine and light table! Hey, it WAS still the '90s!!
My break came when Southern Directory offered me a position as a graphic artist, designing yellow page ads. Oh - the great MAC!! I'd never seen a Mac before this, and I'll never be without one again!! I stayed at Southern Directory through the Yellow Book buy-out, although by that time I had moved on to Macintosh tech support. I
can do some PC support, but I refuse to, so please don't call!!
After Yellow Book, again I was lucky enough to find another job as a graphic artist at the local newspaper, The Commercial Dispatch. After working there for five years, I made the move to The Columbus Packet, where I was employed as the Business Manager/Advertising Director for five years. I am currently employed at Malone Electric, but have plenty of time to work on any freelance jobs. Call me!
